This city space, at 225 East James Street, was one of the original city lots--as drawn out by well-known railroad man, Grenville Dodge--after the railroad came through in 1873. It probably had a log home on it at first, but we did not find anything to indicate this--nor did we find traces of a cistern underneath. (Probably already filled in).
The local Wynne family had access to the house at one point, but Army veteran and bachelor Taylor "Pete" Turner (Larry and Ron Turner's uncle) lived in the house for many years. It was restored in the 1930's and work was later done on it probably in the '80's. As Pete got older, we saw him every Sunday morning slowly walking by our church on his way to his church, The First Baptist. He was a great friend to everyone.
When Pete died several months ago, his heirs, Ron and Larry and family, approached our church because we are next door, and after a little negotiating, we bought the property. The house was one story but had a very high pitched roof, and of course the ceilings inside were originally elevated too. We determined that the house was really past another restoration, and, after offering it to anyone who would move it, we finally decided to have it torn down.
The resulting space will probably be used for church parking and a shady park area for a while, as we are not quite ready to start construction on a new house. The wrecking crew did a great job of saving the several magnificent pecan trees on the property, and we also have pear and fig trees still bearing! We feel we are certainly blessed to be able to own it. Buz Craft, August 10, 2008. |

Click here or on the photo to see more pictures from the reunion. We'll add more as Wendy gets them to us so check the link from time to time to see new photos.
This note was sent to us along with a few pictures by Russell Scott. We thought you would enjoy his letter:
Hello survivors, fellow classmates, brethren, cistern, and Ricky Liston. I'll be 1st, well maybe 4th or 5th to say thanks to each and everyone for a terrific evening and what a huge surprise. I'm so glad I came although I still feel flattened by that steam roller that ironed out all the kinks in my crooked joints. Just in time to realize how much I have missed my classmates and what a special time this was. Very auspicious elements and events must have conspired.
Like Jerry said, back in 1968 we were on the cusp of the world changing in gigantic ways that would that world forever lay rest to the best we ever were. I feel lucky and am glad to have friends sharing the exponential transition into an unsure future. Having feet in both camps allows for double visions (views), unique perspective, and special outlook.
I've also been fortunate to see a large portion of the globe at a discounted rate and still have Wills Point a safe haven to reground, recharge your outlook, and muster up plenty of gumption to go tackle those tasks, chores, & demands of modern living. We're lucky enough to know what simplicity was but still firmed rooted to tackle the endless challenges arriving without notice - a large portion being indescribable, unimaginable. Beyond belief on occasion. A first class affair if I ever saw one.
Be sure to click the photo to see more pix from the reunion.
